The Kouga Manjidani clan and the Iga Tsubagakure clan have been sworn enemies for centuries, with only the Hanzo Hattori truce maintaining a tenuous peace between the two ninja clans. But years later, when former shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa faces a succession dispute to determine which of his two grandsons shall become the next shogun, he decides to settle the matter through a proxy war. Selected to represent respective candidates, the Kouga and Iga clans send ten of their best fighters into a deadly battle, with the winning party deciding the rightful successor. Thus, the truce is cancelled and the ruthless bloodshed begins.
But not all approve the truce’s end. Gennosuke of Kouga and Oboro of Iga, both heirs to their respective clans, were to be married in hopes of ensuring lasting peace. However, unlike typical arranged marriages, they were already deeply in love. Whilst the rest are preparing for war, Gennosuke questions his loyalties while Oboro refuses to fight.
With a unique art style Basilisk: Kouga Ninpouchou is a compelling tale of feud and violence. Will the two clans be consumed by hatred or will love change their destinies?
Extra info
Basilisk: Kouga Ninpouchou was authored by Masaki Segawa, based on the historical fantasy novel Kouga Ninpouchou , by Futaro Yamada, published in 1958, which also inspired Ninja Scroll anime. This manga was published in Japan in 2003 and 2004, by Kodansha’s “Young Magazine Uppers” magazine. Segawa used real images for the background of his manga, superimposing his hand-drawn characters over the top and each chapter was named after how many ninja were alive on each side. It won the 2004 Kodansha Manga Award for general manga. In 2005 Gonzo Studios produced an anime, very close to the manga apart from a few differences.
The entire manga was later produced into 5 volumes, which were translated by Del Ray Manga for release in the U.S.A and Canada, and by Tanoshimi in the UK. It was also released in Germany, with a german translation. A sequel series followed in 2005, titled Yagyuu Ninpouchou, also based on a novel by Futaro Yamada.
